Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation
The
Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation is a community of persons interested
in the expedition, to promote appreciation, research, education and preservation
related to the expedition. The magazine We Proceeded On
is one valuable benefit that alone is well worth a membership, with the
latest findings, events, news, reports, and scholarship. If you have
more than a passing interest in the expedition, join the Foundation to keep in touch
with what is going on. They have an excellent web site, and a Lewis and Clark Library in Great Falls, Montana.

Music
Pierre Cruzatte: A Musical Journey Along the Lewis & Clark Trail
Daniel Slosberg. Tunes and songs of the L&C period played on
instruments of the type carried by the expedition notably Cruzatte's fiddle, mouth harp, sounding horn, drum. Singing is like that of a company of woodsmen. This recording is the probably the best at capturing the actual music on the journey. Includes several lively songs in the French language, and some rough-hewn Christmas songs. "Yankee Doodle" has words to fit incidents on the expedition and may get
you thinking of verses to fit your own adventures. See www.nativeground.com
Fiddle Tunes of the Lewis & Clark Era. CD.
The New Columbia Fiddlers. Voyager Recordings. 424 35th Ave. Seattle WA 98112. www.voyagerrecords.com.
British and American fiddle music of the times. Excellent booklet.
"Most Perfect Harmony" Lewis & Clark A Musical Journey. CD.
The Discovery String Band. Big Canoe Records. Boonville MO 660 882 3353.
Traditional and new songs and tunes. Excellent booklet with words. New songs "The Extraordinary Beast" and "Send the Bear Down" would be good for programs and re-enactors having fun. Historic tunes suitable for the journey include Bonaparte's Retreat and C'est l'Aviron a French-Canadian paddling song.
Lewis & Clark: Sounds of Discovery. Both Indian and white music.
Songs of the Journey(CD), and
Songs of the Journey Companion (book). Edge of the Woods,
PO Box 8251, Yakima WA 98908. $31.50 for both.

Films
There are two outstanding, and different,
films about the Expedition. The
National Geographic-Eddie Bauer sponsored
"Lewis & Clark - Great Journey West" is composed of accurate
re-enactments of key events, many on location,
and unfortunately is only 40 minutes long. It is
impressive, especially in an IMAX theater, and any expedition fan should see
it. This film is a great way to introduce new students and family members to the story.
Ken Burns' documentary, The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, is
longer, detailed, and shows many views of scenery along the route. There are
inteviews with several top historians, but no
reenactments or actors.
Lewis & Clark - Great Journey West. National Geographic/Warner. 2002.
40 minutes. On DVD and as an IMAX release. 40 minutes.
Lewis & Clark - The Journey of the Corps of Discovery. Ken Burns,
director, PBS Home Video, 1997. 4 hours.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Robin D. Williams. The Bitter Root Valley Historical Society says
"...this film is Blue Ribbon quality...
It was our most popular and best attended film this season. It was
everbody's favorite!" "This film will show you the exact
sites that Lewis and Clark saw on their incredible journey."
"... See this video and then use
it for planning your own journey to follow Lewis and Clark!"
The Journey of Sacagawea. Idanha films, 2003. 208 426 8890.
60 mins. VHS. "told through the rich oral history of the
Shoshoni, Hidatsa, and Nez Perce tribes."
Biography - Lewis and Clark, Explorers of the New Frontier
A & E Entertainment, 2000. 50 minutes. "...weak on scenery and scientific
discoveries; better for Indian relations..."
The Far Horizons. Paramount, 1955. Theater release starring Fred MacMurray, Charlton Heston, and Donna Reed (!).
Filmed in Grand Teton National Park. 3 stars out of 5, as a western, according to western movie enthusiasts. As Lewis and Clark history, who knows.
Sources of Supply for Museum Exhibits, Clothing, and Reenactors
Most
historic reenactments and suppliers are focused on the Civil War, Colonial
and revolutionary America, and the 1820-1840 mountain man life. The 1790-1803
period is not directly addressed. You have to know your material to avoid
using items and designs out of period. The resources in the Boats and Equipment page will help, and also some books on other pages here. Also consult classic resource books on antiquities such as
Ivor Hume's A Guide to Artifacts of Colonial America, Knopf, 1970 (which actually extends well into the 1800s) and Wm. Ketchum's Catalog of American Antiques. Some of the following supplies sell many books on
all kinds of topics, with a range of scholarly accuracy.
For clothing of the expedition rely on Moore and Hayne's Tailor Made, Trail Worn.
